Can Your Car Key Tell Time?
One of the things I love about my car is its “Smart Entry and Start” feature. The key fob transmits a radio signal, and if the car detects the signal, the door unlocks when you place your hand in the handle and starts when you put your foot on the brake and press the Start button — all without taking the key out of your pocket. Apparently, designers at Toyota have realized that carrying the key fob around is a real pain, and have teamed with Citizen Watch to make a watch that contains your car’s Smart Key: Toyota to Offer Smart Key Wristwatches. They’ll be available in Japan at first. The trouble is I haven’t worn a watch in about 10 years. Also, if you go somewhere that does valet parking, you have to give them your watch.
Ever since I’ve had this feature in my car, I’ve wanted it in other places. More keyless entry systems are becoming available for the home. Some day I’m sure we’ll just have an embedded chip that will work for car, home, office, etc.
